Martin was 45 and had worked in Retail for most of his life. He had a Diploma in Management from many years ago, but never thought much about it. He was used to dealing with all sorts of people, and thought he was pretty good at it.
A few years ago Martin had begun coaching an under 18’s footy team. He had made a strong connection with a particular young man who had dropped out of school and had no family supports. Through this young man Martin found himself engaged with disadvantaged youth, and he was loving it. It felt like it gave meaning to his life, so when he saw the Residential Care position advertised, he knew it was for him.
Martin was worried he had no formal qualifications, but Berry Street offered to support him in gaining a Cert IV qualification whilst he was working. They acknowledged that his volunteering experience had provided him with excellent youth engagement skills and that the rest could be taught. Now, Martin spends his time studying, working with high risk adolescents and he still manages to fit his footy coaching in too!
